I logged on to Twitter this morning and discovered that after years of battling a number of health issues, including partial paralysis after a stroke in 2007, Nate Dogg, the King of Hip Hop Hooks, died last night in his Long Beach, CA home at the age of 41.
While this next part might get me in some trouble, it has less to do with Nate Dogg and much more to do with my being annoyed at the average American.
While losing any life is tragic, I have to admit it bothers me that Americans will e-mourn (read: show out on Twitter and Facebook like they're at their Pop-Pop's homecoming service) the death of a once somewhat relevant c-lister who nobody honestly checked for in the years leading up to their passing, but won’t mention a peep about the thousands of people who lost their lives in the recently natural disasters in Japan or the civil uprisings in North Africa or the injustices that happen on a daily basis in this country.
To be clear, it wouldn't bother me so much if folks were just like, "Dang, Nate Dogg died this morning. That sucks. May he rest in peace."
But fools can't act right.
People have changed their Twitter avatars abd backgrunds to Nate Dogg pics, they've been tweeting and retweeting lyrics from the one and only Nate Dogg song they know, they've been "liking" Facebook statuses announcing 2-for-1 deals on Nate Dogg t-shirts with praying hands in the back.
It's just all too much.
To be clear, I don't have any problem with people having a connection to an artist or keeping up with entertainment news, for that matter. I just wish folks cared once in a while about something else other than the sneakers Jay-Z wore court side at last night's Nets game. You know, the one's they probably can't afford anyway.
